A sports meeting was held in the Gangjeong elementary school on Saturday, May 4.  The school is only elementary school in the village, of about 70 students. It is a small but beautiful school with a large lawn. Most villagers have graduated this school. It is a school where you can imagine their dreams and memories in their childhood.

The children are proud to say that they are all friends one another despite their parents’ different opinions on con and pro on naval base project. The navy is planning to build military residential housing on the area between this school to the port. However, the villagers have clearly and resolutely opposed to that plan through their official vote on April 10.

It is  moving to see the faces of children, villagers, and peacekeepers  who daily suffer from the difficulties of struggle, if not this short joyful moment. In resistance, life is felt intensely, painful but beautiful at the same time.

The background music is played by Mr.  Lee Tae-Ho, co-executive chairman of the  National Network of Korean Civil Society for Opposing to the Naval Base in Jeju Island, and also Secretary of People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD)
