Despite the opposition even by Island governor, Woo Keun-Min, and members of the Jeju branch of the ruling conservative Saenuri Party, the Lee Myung-Bak government finally enforced the blast on the Gureombi Rock on March 7, 2012. Following the emergency general meeting in the night of March 6 (See the photos by Lee Wooki here), the village siren rang at 3 am on March 7. Many villagers and activists’ cars were mobilized to block the road to stop the explosive cars. People chained themselves to the cars and entered the Gureombi Rock, to stop the Gureombi Rock from being blasted. Since then the people’s fierce war to stop the blast of the Gureombi Rock went on for two months, followed by arrests, imprisonments, of which the numbers had never been precedent. Lots of violation on human rights occurred as well. At the time, Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo was imprisoned, for the 3rd time. Since his arrest on Jan. 30, 2012 he held 42 day prison fast and was released on March 20.
One year later, Prof. Yang is imprisoned and holding fast again. Directly arrested from the court on Feb. 1, he hit his 35th day prison fast, as of March 7, 2013.
