March 22 was the 21st UN World Water Day, as well as Prof. Yang Yoon-Mo’s 50th prison fast day.
The issue is to vitalize on alternative Water Day that recovers the meanings on the local residents’ self-governing rights and democracy, overcoming the hypocritical Water Day events led by big corporations (that currently influence t each nation’s government policies).
In the Gangjeong village, the central and Island government, and corporations are destroying the water environment and ecology, local residents’ rights to self-governing and rights to drink water, rather than protecting those, by ignoring the majority villagers’ opinions and enforcing the construction of war base with illegality, law-evasiveness, and shortcuts.
The photos are the scenes of Gangjeong, the Village of Water, that tries to recover the true meanings of the Water Day, on March 22.
On the day, the 15th caisson that destroys the most pristine and the only UNESCO-designated soft-coral habitat in South Korea came into the Gangjeong Sea.
Even as the main construction gate that has been closed for a while was opened again, the weary cry of the people who have to keep both gates of main construction area and the naval base project building complex burst out..
While the Island government promotes children’s trip to the Gangjeong stream filtration plant and conducts an Island public poll on the tap water (Korean link), it actually contaminates the Gangjeong stream that feeds 70% of the drinking water for the Seogwipo citizens, by permitting the Jeju naval base construction, handing over water to big corporations, and joining the barbarity by the navy and government in destroying Gangjeong, the village of water, that has been even designated as an ecology-excellent village by the Government in 2005.

The navy continues to broadcast announcement that Fr. Mun could be punished under the charge of obstruction of business (the infamous article 314 of the ROK criminal law).
